Manage global automation settings
10 min
By the end of this lesson, you’ll be able to:
- Configure global settings for automation
What is global automation?
Global automation rules apply to all spaces across Jira and Confluence. Jira and Confluence admins configure them.
👉 For example: Mindy, a Jira admin, creates a global automation rule that notifies users when they mark an epic as Done, but not all stories within the epic are Done.
👉 Another example: Gabe, a Confluence admin, creates a global automation rule that archives content not viewed in the last 18 months.
Global automation rules have a global scope so you can easily identify them.
Multi-space rules apply to multiple spaces in Jira and Confluence. Again, only Jira and Confluence admins can configure them. Multi-space rules can apply to either a selected list of spaces or all spaces of a selected space type.
👇 Click the tabs below to learn how to create global automation rules.
To create global automation rules in Jira:
- In the upper-right corner of Jira, select Settings (represented by a gear icon).
- Under Jira admin settings, select System.
- In the sidebar, under Automation, select Global automation.
- Select Create rule then select Create from scratch.
- Configure your automation rule as needed.
- Select Rule details. Note that the Scope field is set to Global. The Who can edit this rule? field is set to All admins. Because this is a global rule, not specific to a space, only Jira admins can edit it.
Manage automation globally
On the Global automation page in Jira and on the Automation page in Confluence, Jira and Confluence admins can manage all automation rules in their site. This includes those created by space admins in Jira and Confluence.
Jira and Confluence admins can:
- Create, view, and edit rules
- Add labels to organize rules
- Disable and remove rules
- Copy rules
- Export rules from this site
- Import rules from another site
- Monitor automation rule usage
The Global automation page in Jira and the Automation page in Confluence function very similarly. However, Confluence admins won't see options for viewing performance insights, automation service status, transferring users, or global configuration.

Let’s explore an example!
Hakeem, a Jira admin, wants to decrease the number of monthly rule executions so he doesn’t reach his site’s limit.
👇 Click the boxes below to see what Hakeem can do.
